Crocidura Caudipilosa

Crocidura Caudipilosa or the Sulawesi hairy-tailed shrew is a recently discovered species of musk shrew. When I stumbled across an article about this special looking animal, I knew I had to paint it! Next to it you see a butterfly of the type Bibasis oedipodea, of which the subtype excellens also lives on Sulawesi.

I received a newsletter from Rettet den Regenwald this week, a German organization dedicated to saving the rainforest, informing us that their founder Reinhard Behrend has passed away. Of course I didn’t know Mr. Behrend personally, but it saddens me to see this generation of nature conservationists leave this earth. Being a nature lover and conservationist in the past surely wasn’t an easy thing, when there was no feeling of conscience or responsibility towards nature in mainstream thinking.

In a way those people were the parents of our conscience and connection to nature, and the way they showed us how to do it, was by simply living their beliefs. Now they’re passing on the responsibility to lead by example to us. May gratitude be our fuel.

Im Newsletter von Rettet den Regenwald lese ich diese Woche, dass der Gründer der Organisation, Reinhard Behrend, verstorben ist. Natürlich habe ich Herrn Behrend nicht gekannt, aber es macht mich traurig zu sehen, dass diese Vorreiter-Generation an Umweltschützern uns verlässt. Im Gegensatz zu heute war dem Großteil der Menschen die Endlichkeit der Natur und ihrer Ressourcen damals nicht bewusst.

Auf eine Art sind diese Menschen die Eltern unseres Gewissens gegenüber der Natur. Sie haben gezeigt wie man es macht, indem sie ihre Überzeugungen gelebt haben – und leben. Langsam wird die Verantwortung an uns weitergegeben. Möge Dankbarkeit unser Treibstoff sein.
